Portal Testing (Test_AP)

Introduction

This article includes the steps to add and configure a Captive.net (test AP) asset. The test AP asset is a useful tool that should be used by customers to test the landing page of a site.

The asset works similarly to the "Test Portal" feature on the Portals section of Captive, however, it is a more reliable reflection of the guest experience as it allows you to login with working credentials such as voucher codes, room number and surname or email. The test AP checks against the credentials you enter and only logs you in  if you provide valid credentials.

Note that this article is applicable to most sites, however, Marriott sites typically have multiple networks - CONFERENCE, GUEST and PUBLIC that must be added to the Test AP asset tags. Refer to the Portal Testing - Marriott article to configure test AP for a Marriott branded site.

Adding a test AP asset

StepDescription
1On the Assets section of Captive, navigate to "Add Asset" on the top navigation bar.

2
On the "Device type*" dropdown, select "Other".

3Fill out the required fields:
  • A suitable Name for the asset.
  • A MAC address, it does not need to be real, it only has to follow the MAC address format, for example: 04-02-20-22-15-25
  • The Vendor must be Captive.net (test AP)
Hit Save when complete.

Configuring the test AP

Step
Description
1Locate the newly created test AP asset and click on "View Asset".

2By default the asset will have a site tag which is enough to use the asset if the site only has one portal. If the site has multiple portals (such as CONFERENCE, PUBLIC and GUEST) additional tags are needed to load the correct portal - if this is the case, please refer to the Portal Testing - Marriott article for additional steps.

Using the test AP

Step
Description
1
To use the test AP, click on the General tab on the asset, scroll down to the Simulate Client button and click on it.

2
Here you need to fill out the 3 required fields:
  • MAC - this can be a made up MAC address so long as it follows the XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX format.
  • IP - this can also be a made up IP address but it must follow the format X.X.X.X
  • SSID - not required if the site only has one portal.

Click Continue when the fields have been populated.

3
The portal should load in another tab.

Now you can login in to the portal and test the guest experience.

An initial test might produce a portal error. If this happens for a new test AP, or a new TEST AP TAG, simply wait a few minutes for the settings to propagate through the system and it will then work.
